IUP NAEA Gets Involved at the PAEA Conference

Last semester, Dr. Ciganko announced to NAEA that he was going to be publishing a book. He said he was going to be giving a presentation on it at the PAEA conference in the Fall and asked if anyone was interested in doing a project with him involving his book and giving a speech at the conference.

Ally Crouse, Rachel Knopf, and Brittany Byrd all offered to help out. The assignment was to read certain chapters of his book and create an artwork that reflected what we learned or felt about the book. Dr Ciganko's book was about the art of landscapes and the connection of spirituality in them. It was about adding deep concept into landscapes.

It really was an amazing process of how each one of us took the project differently. We each gave a 10 minute presentation of our findings and it went wonderfully. People really connected to the fact that, Yes, there needs to be more concept in landscapes and that they do not need to just be simple case studies of your backyard. For some people it's a shock to learn that landscapes can actually mean something. It is something that needs to be stressed more in the classroom.

When we weren't presenting, we went to other sessions of talks and got to enjoy the vendors selling different art supplies for the classroom. We also took a break and went walking around Harrisburg enjoying the city. There was a cute German bar restaurant that we found to eat dinner at called the Gingerbread Man. The environment and food was wonderful.(Plus they gave a free gingerbread cookie as dessert) Overall, it was a great trip we will never forget!
